深海研究专刊蒙特利海湾研究所M站深海群落研究成果

过去30年来,蒙特利海湾研究所(MBARI)在一个名为M站(Station M)的基地对深海群落进行了研究,该站点位于海平面以下4000米(2.5英里),距离加州中部海岸290公里(180英里)。最近一期的《深海研究II》(Deep-Sea Research II)杂志刊登了16篇世界各地科学家在M站开展的研究成果。

深海海底是地球上最大、最不为人所知的栖息地之一,覆盖了地球表面50%以上的面积,在地球碳循环中起着至关重要的作用。M站是目前世界上唯一的深海基地,在这里科学家可以对海底碳供应和深海动物和微生物有机碳消耗进行长期和连续的测量。

在过去的30年里,MBARI生态学家Ken Smith和他的同事们开发并利用多种多样的海洋学工具进行研究。这些工具包括卫星、研究船、底拖网、Alvin等载人深潜器、水下机器人(ROV)、海底着陆器、取芯装置、捕鱼器、沉积物收集器、呼吸计(测量耗氧量)、流速计和延时照相机等。M站的水下观测设备每周7天,每天24小时自动运行。MBARI的科学家每年只需到访基地一次,即可收集和下载数据、维修仪器和更换电池。

新研究的结果极大地改变了海洋生物学家对深海生命的看法。首先,数据显示,深海海底并非静止的,生物群落可以在数天到几十年的时间尺度上发生巨大变化。M站的研究也证实,海底的变化与海面附近的情况直接相关。例如,大量的藻类或凝胶状动物(如salps)可能会消耗地表水中可用的营养和食物,然后死亡并迅速沉入海底。由此产生的“暴风雪”为深海生物提供了一场盛宴,使一些物种得以繁殖并主宰海底群落,至少直到大部分食物被耗尽。

这种“盛宴和饥荒”的循环模式对一些海底动物的影响比其他的更大。例如,上世纪90年代M站里有些海参品种很稀有,后来变得极其丰富,然后完全消失。在整个30年的研究中,其他海参的种群相对稳定。

《深海研究》特别版刊载的16篇研究论文涵盖了多种主题。其中两篇论文关注于海面过程与到达深海海底的碳量之间的联系。三篇论文研究了沉入水中的物质的种类和数量。另外两篇论文描述了海底化学和生物条件的变化。剩下的九篇论文描述了生活在海底附近的动物和微生物,及其对环境变化的响应。

这些论文概述了M站正在进行的研究,并展示了这些研究如何提高科学家对深海生物地球化学、生物学和生态系统的理解。随着人类对海洋的影响变得越来越普遍,对M站和世界各地类似地点的研究对于了解这一广阔但研究甚少的环境至关重要。
